What show is Murderbot's favorite TV series, The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon, based on? When Murderbot hacked its governor module, the first thing it did was binge-watch this series.
Now, fans are wondering what real-world series might have inspired Murderbot's fictional obsession. Let's find out!
What is Murderbot's Favorite Show About?
Murderbot would rather do anything else than look after humans and follow protocol. In this case, it's to reach into the planet's database to watch its go-to comfort media: The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon.
Starring the likes of Harold & Kumar and Star Trek star John Cho, alongside co-stars She's Gotta Have It's DeWanda Wise, 30 Rock's Kenneth Parcell, and the MCU's Clark Gregg, the show gives off a similar cinematography akin to Star Trek's navigation room.

But is The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon actually based on the Star Trek franchise? Just because Murderbot's, well, a bot doesn't mean it's bound to like the same futuristic aspects for nothing.
Considering the soap opera elements of being tied to romantic affairs aside from the sci-fi-esque setting, there's a more accurate and surprising inspiration behind Murderbot's fave.
What Show is the Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon Based On?
This might shock you, but despite the situation Sanctuary Moon is portraying, the fictional show is based on one of the best true crime series, How to Get Away with Murder, as confirmed by the original author herself, Martha Wells.
"Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon is kind of based on How to Get Away with Murder, but in space, on a colony, with all different characters and hundreds more episodes, basically," Wells explained in a 2020 interview.
She added that while most humans would find watching 'too much TV' a 'waste of time', Murderbot found the activity rather comforting than troubling for humanity.

"When I was growing up, there was very much the thing of 'Oh, TV is wasting your mind,' and that typical kind of stuff, but I always found it really comforting," Wells said, "You can critique it—you don't have to like everything about a show—but it can also be a comforting presence and keep you company. So I wanted to get that into it."
While Murderbot season 1 has recently ended, fans can rest assured that more episodes will show the titular bot's fascination with the Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon as a part of its journey.
For now, the entire season 1 of Murderbot is available to stream on Apple TV+.
