With Murderbot season 1 ending, the fate of the titular robot is in limbo, leaving the imagination to fans of what they could expect when it returns for season 2.
Here is everything we know so far about what Murderbot season 2 could hold, based on the news so far and what the book has in store.
Has Murderbot Been Renewed for Season 2? When Can We Expect Their Return?

The titular robot (played by Alexander Skarsgård) wouldn't be able to return if it has yet to be greenlit by the streamer. Well, you're in luck.
On Thursday, July 10, a day ahead of Murderbot season 1's finale release, Apple TV confirmed it has greenlit the second season, with creators and executive producers (brothers) Chris and Paul Weitz.
"We're so grateful for the response that Murderbot has received, and delighted that we're getting to go back to Martha Wells' world to work with Alexander, Apple, CBS Studios, and the rest of the team," the Weitz brothers said in a statement (via Variety).
There is no confirmed release date yet. However, fans can likely expect it in late 2026 or early 2027 at most.
Which Book will Murderbot Season 2 be Based On?

Since season 1 is based on Wells' first book in the Murderbot Diaries series, All Systems Red, then its season finale will possibly continue the story through the second book, Artificial Condition, to have the timeline make sense.
The second book sees Murderbot head off to the RaviHyral mining facility, where it hacked its governing module, aka where its memories of the massacre were located.
The season 1 finale may have come a complete circle when Murderbot restored his memories, but the Company and the entire story barely end there. Season 2 should be able to address more of what's to come.
Who Can We Expect to Return to Murderbot Season 2?

There is no official cast list yet for who appears and who will return to Murderbot season 2, but we can deduce based on what we've seen in the finale.
Apart from the comeback of the main characters, Alexander Skarsgård as the titular bot and David Dastmalchian as Gurathin, the rest of the supporting cast includes:
- Norma Dumezweni as Mensah
- Sabrina Wu as Pin-Lee
- Tattiawna Jones as Arada
- Akshay Khanna as Ratthi
- Tamara Podemski as Bharadwaj
Upon the ending of season 1, the original author suggested they might "shuffle the deck a little bit," in which season 2 might mix in some scenes from the third or fourth book to make sure key characters get their chance at making their on-screen debut.
"I think the second book, for people who are familiar with the series, doesn't really have the same team members, and I think it would be sad if we didn't have some element of that," Wells previously told NPN, "It's not likely to be a book for book. The ending of the first book meant a lot to us, so that felt like the ending of our first series if we got a second series."
