Dead Boy Detectives is finally out now, and fans who have already binge-watched all eight episodes may have lots of questions. Among these is what happened to Niko following the ending of Dead Boy Detectives.
As the titular detectives, Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine are the key characters of the series, though they are joined by a colorful cast. Among them is Niko Sasaki.

Dead Boy Detectives is a new Netflix series that’s related to The Sandman. After all, the show is based on Neil Gaiman’s comic of the same name that’s also set in The Sandman universe.
Niko Sasaki is a colorful addition to the show’s cast, literally as she has an eye-catching sense of style in the series that no doubt stands out, especially given the more muted tones of her companions’ outfits.
In the series, Niko is a Japanese student and neighbor of Crystal Palace, a major ally of the detective duo Charles and Edwin. She came to the series’ setting of Port Townsend in Washington following her father’s death.
While there, Niko gains the power to see ghosts. Thus, she becomes another key ally of the detectives, helping them in their various investigations.
This power of hers manifests in the series quite colorfully, adding to her memorable presence in the series.
In the show, Niko is played by Japanese actor Yuyu Kitamura. This is her first major role.

Is Niko in the Dead Boy Detectives Comic, Explained
Netflix’s live-action adaptation may take cues from the original comic, but it takes a lot of liberties with the source material.
Sure, characters like Crystal Palace are taken straight from the comic, but a lot of things about them are changed to better fit the setting.
As for Niko, she does not seem to play a role in the major appearances of the Dead Boy Detectives in the comics.

What Happened to Niko in Dead Boy Detectives? Is She Dead, Explained
Even though she’s a major character only in the series, Niko should be a memorable character even for fans of the comics.
Sadly, she meets her end in the show’s eighth episode. As Niko and Crystal face Esther the Witch to rescue the detectives, Niko is fatally stabbed by Esther as she jumps in front of Crystal to save her.
This might not be the last we’ll see of Niko though. In episode 8’s final scene, Kingham and Litty are shown inside an igloo, and they’re with an unknown person who shows them Niko’s lucky charm.
Because of this, Niko may return one way or another if the series gets a second season. This won’t come as too much of a surprise, especially given that Charles and Edwin are also technically dead.
