Julia Garner will star in an upcoming Madonna biopic

In June 2022, Julia Garner has been cast as Madonna in an upcoming biopic about the pop icon, Variety reported. According to sources that told the outlet, Garner took part in a competitive audition process with "over a dozen candidates" that included stars such as Alexa Demie, Sky Ferreira, Florence Pugh, and Odessa Young before finally landing with the Ozark star.

The Madonna biopic, titled Little Sparrow, will require a skilled dancer and singer, offering the actress a platform to showcase her vast array of talents. Madonna is directing the film herself and handpicked Garner to play her in the role.

Universal Pictures is producing the film, which will follow the early days of the queen of perpetual reinvention and oft-controversial artist. Amy Pascal is attached as a producer, and Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman Donna Langley won the script in a multi-studio bidding war, and Amy Pascal is attached as a producer.

In March 2022, Deadline reported that Julia Garner is set to star in The Royal Hotel. The movie reteams Garner with Kitty Green, who directed The Assistant, which earned the Inventing Anna star an Independent Spirit Award nomination.

Green is directing the film and co-writing the script with Oscar Redding. Production was scheduled to start this summer. The project will be produced by See-Saw Films, Kath Shelper, Emile Sherman, Iain Canning, Liz Watts. Simon Gillis will executive produce the film.

According to the film's description, The Royal Hotel "follows American backpackers Hannah and her friend Sydney, who resort to a working holiday at the Royal Hotel, a bar in a tiny, male-dominated mining town deep in the Australian Outback. The hotel is notorious for cycling through young female employees every few months, and it isn’t long before they are subjected to mind games and manipulation, trapped in the middle of nowhere, unsure who to trust."
