Viggo Mortensen opened up about his potential return as Aragorn in the new Lord of the Rings movie.

It was recently announced that Warner Bros. is working on a new Lord of the Rings movie titled The Hunt for Gollum with Andy Serkis set to direct and reprise his iconic role and Peter Jackson involved as one of the producers.

Since then, fans have been wondering whether the other actors from the original trilogy will also return in the new film and now one of the stars has weighed in.

Mortensen was asked whether he is interested to reprise the role of Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum during a recent interview.

He said that he is open to return in the new movie, but it will all depend on whether the idea feels right for him.

"Sure. I don't know exactly what the story is, I haven't heard. Maybe I'll hear about it eventually. I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot," the Oscar nominee said.

"I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise."

This is a promising remark from Mortensen since he is highly suggesting that he is willing to make his return in the Middle-earth if his iconic character becomes a pivotal part of the new film.

Since we don't know exactly what the story will be yet and whether it is set before or after the original trilogy, it is hard to speculate on the potential return of the other Lord of the Rings actors.

At the very least, we know now that we could expect some appearance from Mortensen if the creative team decides to bring him back in some capacity.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is slated to arrive in theaters on 2026.
