Product placement is one thing, but somehow True Detective Season 4 has something different for Lone Star Beers. Fans are quick to call this an "easter egg" for the series, but is it really? Does the Lone Star beer hold significance in connecting the series timeline?

True Detective Season 4 Turns Lone Star Beer into an Easter Egg

The True Detective series is far from over as Season 4 is releasing six episodes on HBO Max. However, what remains to be seen by fans is whether True Detective Season 4, subtitled Night Country is connected to the Season 1 timeline.

Considering that each season features a new star-studded cast and characters and is purely an anthological story, pinning down the official timeline would make sense if their stories are entangled with one another.

In this case, one particular thing that fans have fixated on is the reappearance of the Lone Star beer in the series.

Sure, it might be something as simple as TV advertising, but it could also be a connection to something bigger the more True Detective pushes forward.

The Lone Star Beer's First Appearance

For those not in the know, the Lone Star beer was first featured in Season 1, when Rust Cohle (played by Matthew McConaughey) asked for the beer, "I'll take a sixer of Old Milwaukee or Lone Star, nothing snooty."

The branded beer was also visible in episodes 2 and 3. This eventually boosted Lone Star's beer sales through the roof. Who knew that this product placement had more up its sleeve?

While there are theories that Travis (played by Erling Eliasson) from Season 4 might be Rust's father, the fans have their own guess about the Lone Star beer easter egg.

Is True Detective Season 4 Connected to Season 1?

As of writing, nothing has been confirmed about the series timeline yet.

The most that we can make about the series timeline comes from True Detective creator Issa López told Polygon that characters could be "peering across through the curtain that divides this plane from the next one."

López happened to mention how similar Season 4 is to Season 1's story, "Rust Cohle has moments where he can peer into that universe."

Let's not forget one of Rust's most iconic quotes from the first season, "Someone once told me, 'Time is a flat circle.'" This means we may be looking at the timeline coming to a "full circle" this Season 4.

Now, whether or not True Detective intentionally made Lone Star beer to be proof of connected timelines amongst the series, the brand still makes a good easter egg for fans to keep a close eye on as Season 4 debuts more episodes.

True Detective Season 4 premiered on HBO on January 14th (Sunday). In the meantime, fans can look out for new episodes weekly as the finale episode releases on February 25th.
