Anime NYC 2023 saw lots of world premieres along with upcoming anime announcements. Among these is a True Beauty anime, which is coming to Crunchyroll next year.
Webtoon fans will likely be familiar with this series as True Beauty is one of the most popular romantic comedy webtoons in recent years.
Despite its popularity, an animated series adaptation was a surprise for many fans. After all, the webtoon has already gotten a live-action Korean drama adaptation back in late 2020.
True Beauty Webtoon Is Getting Another Adaptation
It’s fair to say that the True Beauty webtoon was a global hit during its run from April 2018 to June 2023.
What’s interesting is that its success predates the K-drama as it was already one of the most-viewed titles on the WEBTOON platform back in 2019.
Of course, the K-drama adaptation helped boost the series’ popularity even more, especially outside of Korea. After all, the K-drama adaptation was released on platforms such as Prime Video and Netflix.
The K-drama also featured a star-studded cast headlined by Moon Ga-Young (Find Me in Your Memory) and Cha Eun-Woo (Gangnam Beauty).
Its story was also a big reason for its popularity. The series follows Lim Ju-kyung, a student who has been bullied in her previous school as she was thought to be ugly.
In response, she worked hard to become a makeup expert, and she soon became popular in her new school. Soon, she becomes close with two boys, both of whom are unaware of her makeup-less appearance.
For those who haven’t seen the K-drama yet, or for fans who want to see a new version of it, an anime adaptation is coming soon to Crunchyroll.

True Beauty Anime Announced by Crunchyroll
The upcoming anime adaptation was announced by Crunchyroll during its Anime NYC 2023 panel. A key visual for the series was released alongside its reveal.
This isn’t technically an anime for purists as it’s a Korean production (called aeni in Korea). Handling animation duties are Studio N and Cocktail Media.
Despite being made by different studios, fans noted that this upcoming series is reminiscent of Lookism, the Korean animated series that was streamed on Netflix.
Instead of Netflix, though, the True Beauty anime will be streamed on Crunchyroll in 2024.
The anime will be available on the platform in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, and India.
