Why did Tom Hanks' recent movie, Here, flop on its opening weekend? Considering that legendary Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis reunited with Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, what could've been missing?
What Happened to the Opening Weekend Box Office of 'Here'? $50M Down the Drain
Robert Zemeckis may have been known for his three-time Oscar-winning Who Framed Roger Rabbit? for the director's live-action animated hybrid technological storytelling and the motion picture, The Polar Express.
However, he is also known for being the director behind the Oscar Best Picture Forrest Gump, which starred Tom Hanks as the titular character and Robin Wright as Jenny Curran, which brings us Here.
Here is a 2024 movie that reunited these three back on the big screens under Miramax's $50 million budget and Sony's release.
Based on a six-page comic strip by Richard McGuire, the movie Here is based on the 1989 published comics that eventually turned into a graphic novel (2014).
As the story goes, Here shows multiple generations of couples inhabiting the same home for over a century — which heightened its creativity as the flick was captured in a single, unmoving camera.
However, despite the promising premise and cinematography, Here's opening box office weekend didn't click for viewers as it only earned $5M.
According to Deadline's sources, multiple studios passed on producing Here as it was a 'risky' and 'difficult' movie that the masses could appreciate.
The movie was also largely financed by foreign sales and Miramax co-owner, Paramount, did not intend to handle the global premiere of Here.
Forrest Gump Director and Cast Reunion Was Not Enough
Unfortunately, as much as the Back to the Future and Oscar-winning director Zemeckis brought the technological storytelling to life, Here may not have been the audience's cup of tea.
Even though there is the appeal of having a single camera navigate the life of a multi-generational family for over a century, viewers who already went to watch the film did not enjoy the cinematic experience.
More specifically, the pacing and the story in itself. It certainly doesn't help that AI enhancement was utilized in some bits of the movie.
