Thor Director Discusses the Asgardian God of Thunder’s Journey in the MCU

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has had quite a journey throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In his first standalone film, Thor Odinson was actually eager to rule over Asgard. Falling into a state of depression after losing his home planet and then losing his only brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in Avengers: Endgame, fans get to see Thor giving up his place as the ruler of Asgard to Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson). At the end of the film, Thor rises to the occasion and helps defeat Thanos together with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and the rest of the Avengers.

Thor has been through quite a lot, and according to 2011 Thor director Kenneth Branagh, the Avengers' journey has been nothing short of "amazing."

Speaking in an interview with ComicBook.com to discuss his upcoming film, Artemis Fowl, Branagh decided to take some time to reflect on his career and the time that he worked with Marvel Studios.

During his discussion with the entertainment news outlet, the filmmaker decided to tackle Thor's growth and development in the MCU.

"In a way, I think we put in some emotional ballast at the front of the story that means he could bounce around and develop in the way that he has and rather like all of the extraordinary ways that the Thor comics do," Branagh said. "There's an amazing diversity of story and character development inside 50-odd years of comics. The films are now doing it with the character."

There's a lot of excitement over Thor's future in the MCU. In the final moments of Endgame, fans got to see Thor setting out together with the Guardians of the Galaxy, leaving New Asgard in the capable hands of Valkyrie. While we're not quite sure what kind of adventures Thor will be having with Marvel's merry band of cosmic misfits, we do know that the Asgardian God of Thunder is set to star in a fourth standalone movie, Thor: Love and Thunder.

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to premiere on February 11, 2022.
