Renee Rapp's fan-favorite character Leighton officially made her exit in the recently aired episode 2 of The Sex Lives of College Girls season 3.
Months before they started production on the new season, it was announced that Rapp would be leaving the series and was set to only appear in a handful of episodes of season 3 to give her character a proper closure.
How did the series give Leighton a proper sendoff? Let's explore below.
Why Did Renee Rapp's Character Leighton Leave Essex College?
Episode 2 of The Sex Lives of College Girls season 3 marked the final appearance of Rapp's fan-favorite character Leighton
In the previous episode, a professor informed Leighton that there is an available slot at a math program at MIT in Boston.
To pursue her passion for math and follow her dreams, Leighton decided to drop out of Essex College and transfer to MIT. However, since classes are set to start very soon, Leighton had to leave Essex immediately.
It was an emotional moment as Leighton said farewell to the other main characters of the series. While it was a difficult decision to say goodbye to her friends, at the end of the day, she needed to follow where her heart was and start a new chapter of her college life.
After the recent episode, Leighton won't be making any more appearances in the rest of the season (or the series). Fans will definitely miss her presence in the series.
Why Did Renee Rapp Exit The Sex Lives of College Girls?
According to reports of her departure from The Sex Lives of College Girls last year, Rapp decided to leave the series to focus on her music career.
As fans of Rapp have noticed, she has become a rising star thanks to her scene-stealing turn as Regina George in the Mean Girls musical film earlier year. She has also become a beloved popstar and was recently on tour.
Co-showrunner Justin Noble explained in an interview that they wanted to give Leighton a proper sendoff.
"This is Leighton Murray. The only thing she knows how to do is win. So, obviously, the only thing that was fitting is if she made a choice that was for her best self moving forward," he said.
"She sort of ends up excelling at the test of what college is more than any of the other girls. I think she just learned the lesson of what services her best future fastest.
Noble added, "It’s nice that it comes at such a, like, bittersweet loss. She doesn’t want to leave her friends, but she knows it’s what’s for the best."
