The Sandman: Why Did Delight Become Delirium in Season 2?

Delirium Sandman

Delirium Sandman

Of all the Endless siblings in The Sandman, Delight's story is perhaps the most heartbreaking.

While she only briefly appears in season 2, her transformation into Delirium is a profound mystery that begs an explanation for both new fans and comic readers alike.

Delight is the youngest sister of the Endless siblings. Even though fans expected the siblings to react to the drastic change their sister went through, no one but the audience scratched their heads.

For starters, how did the demure and pure-looking woman in the painting seen in the season 2 premiere turn into... well, a woman called Delirium (both played by Esmé Creed-Miles), wearing dark, gothic attire, the complete opposite of what the audiences (especially non-comicbook fans) expected her to be?

Considering how the Endless siblings didn't blink an eye at the glaring contrast, Delight's transformation had long undergone its change, right under the fans' noses. What exactly happened to the once embodiment of joy and pleasure that turned into the personification of chaos?

What Happened to Delight? Why Did She Become Delirium?

One thing's for sure about the Endless siblings: they're not usually allowed to change, whether it's leaving their post like Destruction did or how they could revert to chaos should they wish it. So, how is Delirium's case different from the others?

To tell the truth, Delirium's transformation wasn't explicitly addressed in the Netflix series or in Neil Gaiman's source material. But the answer lies in deducing facts that appeared in the comic books, one of which includes Destruction himself watching his sister change from Delight to Delirium.

Fan theories stretched from Delight potentially encountering a traumatic experience, to possibly having changed due to her broken connection with her brother, Destruction. Others were led to believe that Delight's transformation, similar to Destruction, is just how the world worked, even beyond the powers and abilities the Endless could handle.

But perhaps the absence of a concrete explanation is exactly what The Sandman aimed for. Despite Delirium's tendencies, she's speculated to be the most powerful of them all, given how she doesn't have rules to follow and how she naturally follows the flow of the universe.

An ever-changing entity that adapts and isn't afraid to embrace who she is, no matter who she turns out to be.
