Recently, it was announced that the highly anticipated sequel to Spaceballs is officially moving forward with a theatrical release set in 2027.

Most of the key creatives from the original are expected to return, including Mel Brooks and Rick Moranis, who is coming out of retirement after decades of acting hiatus.

The arrival of the sequel comes at a perfect time when Hollywood is over-reliant on doing sequels and other expansions of their IP franchises, including Star Wars, which the original film parodied.

Why Do We Need the Spaceballs Sequel Today?

When the original Spaceballs film was released in 1987, the Star Wars franchise consisted only of the original main trilogy.

However, it drastically changed throughout the decades. Not only is the property now owned by Disney, but it has become a mega franchise with two more trilogies, two spinoff films, countless TV shows on Disney+, and other media expansions.

Hollywood itself is now very reliant on franchises and mining their IPs endlessly, as they see it as their way to make more profit and satisfy the corporate overlords and Wall Street.

A new Spaceballs movie today could give them an avenue to poke fun at the recent Hollywood trend. It was even a joke in the original film that the sequel could be titled "Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money."

Ironically, you could even argue that the decision to make a Spaceballs sequel was Amazon MGM Studios' way of mining their IP as well and the upcoming film is doing exactly what they are poking fun at.

Regardless of what you may feel about it, you cannot deny that the sequel's arrival comes at a perfect time when Hollywood is doing more cash grab projects, and it looks like it won't die down anytime soon.

What to Expect in Spaceballs 2

So far, the plot details regarding the sequel are still being kept under wraps, but it is described as "A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film."

Brooks said in the announcement video, "After forty years, we asked 'What do the fans want?' But instead, we're making this movie."

Aside from Brooks and Moranis, Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga are also expected to reprise their roles. They are joined by new cast members Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Josh Gad.

Josh Greenbaum will serve as the director. Gad also co-wrote the script and serves as producer alongside Brooks. A 2027 theatrical release is being planned.
