Rick Moranis is officially coming out of retirement as he is confirmed to reprise his role in Spaceballs 2.
The 80s icon has been on an acting hiatus for the last few decades and has rarely made public appearances. His last live-action movie prior to his retirement was in the 1997 direct-to-video film Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves.
What is Rick Moranis' Comeback Project?
It was recently announced that the highly anticipated sequel, Spaceballs 2, is officially moving forward and slated for theatrical release in 2027.
Not only that, Moranis is confirmed to reprise the fan-favorite role of Dark Helmet.
The news has excited many fans, as it has been decades since he was last seen in a movie, and they are hopeful that this is a sign that Moranis will be acting regularly again.
A few years ago, he almost made his acting comeback in the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids legacy sequel titled Shrunk. However, the project was stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also made an appearance in a Mint Mobile commercial alongside Ryan Reynolds and an episode of the Disney+ documentary series Prop Culture.
What to Expect in Spaceballs 2
Moranis is not the only cast member from the original film who is confirmed to return in the sequel.
Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, and Mel Brooks are also set to reprise their roles. They are joined by Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, and Lewis Pullman (Bill's son).
So far, the plot details regarding the sequel are still being kept under wraps, but it is described as "A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film."
"After forty years, we asked 'What do the fans want?' But instead, we're making this movie," Brooks said in the video announcement.
Gad also co-wrote the script and will produce the film. Brooks, who directed the original, is also producing. Josh Greenbaum will serve as the director.
