The Reason Why Drogon Doesn’t Burn Jon Snow In Game Of Thrones’ Finale

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the series finale of Game of Thrones, the episode "The Iron Throne."

There were a lot of pretty surprising moments in the finale of Game of Thrones. Not only did these surprising turn of events come from the series major human players, but some of these surprises came from Daenery's (Emilia Clarke) remaining dragon, Drogon.

After speaking with her men after drowning King's Landing in flames, Dany makes her way to the Iron Throne, this time as the Queen of Westeros. This was a major moment for Daenerys. She had finally taken the throne that had killed her family. Jon (Kit Harrington) follows Daenerys to the Iron Throne, and there he listens to her plans for the future. When he finally understands that Daenerys is set on "liberating" all of the world, Jon stabs her through the chest, murdering her.

It's a terrible moment that's soon followed by the arrival of Drogon. The dragon is visibly upset, sniffing the cold body of his mother. Finding his mother dead on the ground with a knife to her chest with Jon Snow standing next to her, Drogon had every option to burn Daenery's lover to the ground. But he doesn't. Instead, Drogon breathes fire right next to Jon, burning the Iron Throne instead.

Why did Drogon leave Jon alive?

Could Drogon have kept himself/herself from burning Jon knowing that he was a Targaryen? That's a possibility. After all, Drogon and Jon had connected before. Though Drogon is clearly upset with Jon, the dragon seems to understand his lineage.

Or could have Drogon understood that it wasn't Jon that killed Daenerys, but the lure of power symbolized by the Iron Throne?

What do you think was Drogon's reason for keeping Jon Snow alive? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Game of Thrones aired its final episode last Sunday on HBO.
