The Matrix Resurrections Director Addresses Next Trilogy Rumors

It has been a long wait but The Matrix Resurrections is finally coming this week. So does this mean we can expect more movies in the future? There have been speculations that the fourth Matrix film will tease the next movie trilogy of the franchise. Now, director Lana Wachowski has opened up about the possibility of working on three more Matrix films.

There is little doubt that The Matrix Resurrections was a huge and pleasant surprise for fans when it was first announced a few years ago. After all, people believed that the trilogy was done, thanks to the death of Neo in The Matrix Revolutions. Nevertheless, the trailer for Resurrections proved there is a way to bring Keanu Reeves back and introduce new yet familiar characters into the franchise.

So can we expect a new movie trilogy once The Matrix Resurrections drops this week? Lana Wachowski was asked about it during the film's red carpet premiere in San Francisco and she initially tried to pass the question on to her producers. When she couldn't reach them, she simply answered, "No."

It's a disappointing response considering that fans are hoping to see more of the characters who will return and will be introduced in the movie. However, there is a good reason why Wachowski isn't ready to revisit The Matrix again soon.

Early on in the interview, Wachowski explained that she and sister Lilly had no intention of working on another Matrix movie. However, Lana changed her mind when she lost both parents and tried to deal with the grief. This led to the idea for The Matrix Resurrections which was undoubtedly inspired by the Wachowskis' hope that their parents are in a better place.

The Matrix Resurrections brings back Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as Neo and Trinity, respectively. The movie will hit theaters and stream on HBO Max on December 22, 2021.
