The Last of Us premiere became HBO’s second biggest premiere on the streaming site, garnering 4.7 million viewers from only its first episode. The Last of Us Episode 1 may have ended on a cliffhanger, but showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin had long been planning that the first episode not be as “boring” as they initially had planned. Now, The Last of Us episodes will be released weekly, and ahead of their release, each episode’s runtime has been revealed.
According to Rolling Stone, The Last of Us Episode 2 airs on January 22, which will run at 55 minutes, and set to focus on Joel (Pedro Pascal), Tess (Anna Torv), and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) traveling through an abandoned and flooded Boston hotel as they make their way to deliver Ellie off to the Fireflies.

As for The Last of Us Episode 3, the episode will run at 80 minutes, airing on January 29. In Episode 3, Nick Offerman as Bill will finally be introduced along with his partner Frank and Melanie Lynskey’s Kathleen. While untitled, The Last of Us Episode 3 is rumored to be the early frontrunner for “best episode of TV in 2023”.
Finally, The Last of Us Episode 4, which will premiere on February 2, comes with a 50-minute runtime. And seeing as the showrunners are keeping a close adaptation of the video game, it is possible that the fourth episode will reveal the group of cannibals Joel and Ellie are set to encounter, which eventually causes their separation at some point.
The Last of Us Episode 1 is available to stream on HBO Max. Meanwhile, The Last of Us Episode 2 comes on January 22, 2023 at 9 PM EST / 6 PM PT.
