Millie Bobby Brown might still be busy getting ready to fight Vecna once again in the fifth and final season Stranger Things, but she's set to star in Netflix's upcoming big-budget sci-fi movie, The Electric State.
Announced on June 28, 2022, The Electric State will be directed by Anthony and Joseph Russo, the directional duo behind Netflix's upcoming movie The Gray Man, which stars Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and RegĆ©-Jean Page. The movie is a sci-fi adaptation of Simon StĆ„lenhagās 2018 graphic novel.
In The Electric State, Brown will play a teenage orphan who travels across a retro-futuristic American West with a drifter and her robot companion while searching for her lost brother.
The Russos will also produce The Electric State as part of their production company AGBO's continuing partnership with Netflix, following their work on Extraction and The Gray Man, which is set to release on Netflix on July 22.
According to Deadline, the Russos were teaming-up with Brown on the movie at the end of 2020, which was originally set up at Universal. When a deal couldn't be made, Netflix was able to acquire the rights for the project given their strong ties to both Brown and the Russos.
The Electric State Plot: What will this sci-fi movie be about?
As mentioned above, The Electric State follows the story of an orphaned teen named Michelle (played by Brown) and her trusty robot as they embark on a cross-country mission to find her missing brother.
The official synopsis of The Electric State graphic novel from Amazon reads:
In late 1997, a runaway teenager and her small yellow toy robot travel west through a strange American landscape where the ruins of gigantic battle drones litter the countryside, along with the discarded trash of a high-tech consumerist society addicted to a virtual-reality system. As they approach the edge of the continent, the world outside the car window seems to unravel at an ever faster pace, as if somewhere beyond the horizon, the hollow core of civilization has finally caved in.
The Electric State will likely be faithful to its source material, but the Russos and the writers might make some slight changes.
The Electric State Crew: Who are the creative minds behind the movie?
According to Deadline, some of team are reuniting with Gray Man writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (who also served as writers on the Russos' Captain America and Avengers movies) adapting the script, and the Russos and Mike Larocca producing for AGBO. Chris Castaldi and Patrick Newall will also serve as producers.
The Electric State Release Date: When is it coming to Netflix?
In the movie's official announcement, Netflix confirmed that The Electric State will start production in the fall of 2022, so it'll probably take at least a year before it's complete. Given the visual effects expected in The Electric State, its post-production will likely take long to finish, so we'll have to wait for Netflix to announce an official release date.
It'll likely be released in late 2023, at the earliest, but if that all goes according to plan.
The Electric State Cast: Who else is starring in the upcoming sci-fi movie?
At the time of this writing, only Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown is set to star in The Electric State. We still don't know who will provide the voice for her character's robot companion.
There are also rumors that Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World Dominion) might also star in the movie, but this is yet to be confirmed.
We will update this page with more casting details as soon as Netflix announced them.
