What Happened to Ryan Butcher in The Boys Season 5?

The Boys season 5 picks up with Ryan in a precarious position. After a tragic accident, in which Ryan had used his powers to kill Grace Mallory in the season 4 finale, Ryan is back under Homelander's wing, on the run from fear of being discovered for his crime.
As the first two episodes of season 5 revealed, Ryan is being groomed (for one year, noting the one-year time jump) to become the face of the "New Era" of Supes. However, the accident with Mallory continues to haunt him throughout his days.
While Homelander is busy awakening Soldier Boy from cryostasis to help combat Butcher's anti-Supe virus in exchange for clearing his name to the public, Ryan is increasingly isolated.
It is also worth noting that Ryan's presence may be the only thing keeping Homelander from "burning it all down", adding further to the importance of his character arc in the final season.
Considering that Ryan's internal conflict with himself could only be resolved once the real moral Billy Butcher comes to light, there still may be hope for the natural-born Supe to fess up and gather the strength and courage he needs to face facts: he is their only chance at killing Homelander for good.
That is, if Butcher manages to overcome the Kessler influence (the culprit pushing Butcher to view Ryan as a target rather than a son) and save Ryan.
Will Ryan Butcher Be Able to Kill Homelander in the End?

Many non-comic book readers may not know, but Ryan was not even supposed to exist. In the comic books, the superpowered infant was ripped out of Becca's womb and killed by Butcher before he could cause further chaos in the future.
The fact that Ryan still lives in the Prime series can potentially lead the young Supe to do what's right for the world and destroy his father once and for all. How he will overcome the guilt haunting him of his kill is what remains to be seen, as of writing.
Meanwhile, fans can wait for The Boys season 5 episode 3 to premiere on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, on Prime Video. The finale series releases its episodes weekly on Wednesdays. Stay tuned!
