  • Quick Answer: Dominique McElligott didn't return for The Boys finale because she has mostly retired from acting, causing scheduling conflicts when showrunner Eric Kripke invited her back.

Fans have been wondering why Dominique McElligot did not reprise the role of Queen Maeve during the final season of The Boys.

The fan-favorite character made her last appearance in the third season finale of the hit series, where she lost her powers and went into hiding in an undisclosed location. A lot of fans were hoping she would return one last time in the final season, but unfortunately, the series ended its final chapter without any appearance from her.

In a recent interview with GoldDerby discussing the series finale, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke explained why Queen Maeve was not brought back for a cameo appearance in the final season.

He explained that McElligot was invited to return, but she declined to reprise her role due to scheduling conflicts, and she has "mostly" retired from acting after leaving the series.

"I would have loved to have had Maeve. I was in conversation with Dom. We still email once in a while. She's mostly retired from acting, and her schedule didn't work out," the showrunner said.

"It was all a very friendly, non-controversial thing. I was like, 'If we wrote it, would you do it?' And she's like, 'I'm kind of out of it, and I'm busy, and unfortunately I can't, but send everyone my love.' That was sort of it."

So far, McElligot has not made any public comments about the series since she left at the end of the third season.

Out of the former main cast members, Elisabeth Shue, Aya Cash, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are the ones who returned to the final season to reprise their respective roles briefly.

The fifth and final season of The Boys recently finished its run, while Gen V was canceled by Prime Video after airing two seasons.

The next spinoff series is Vought Rising, which will star Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy and Aya Cash as Stormfront, reprising their roles from the main series. It is slated to premiere in 2027.

The prequel is a twisted, noir-inspired murder mystery that delves into the 1950s origins of Vought International. It tracks the early exploits of Soldier Boy alongside the ruthless maneuvers of Clara Vought (the woman fans would eventually know as Stormfront).

They have strikingly similar origins rooted in the work of Frederick Vought. Soldier Boy stands as the first American non-aging superhero, a product of World War II experimentation. He is joined by Stormfront, who served as Frederick Vought’s first successful test subject. Having married the creator before their move to the United States, her presence in the 1950s highlights the deeply personal and diabolical history behind the Vought empire’s rise to power.
