Soldier Boy is back in The Boys Season 5, and it seems his mission goes beyond tracking down Billy Butcher–he may be setting up the season’s biggest twist.

Homelander awakens Soldier Boy from his cryogenic state, only to expose him to a virus capable of killing supes.

Yet as Soldier Boy appears to survive, what does this mean for The Boys Season 5?

Soldier Boy is exposed to a virus that could have killed him, but in a shocking twist, he sits up even while encased in a body bag in The Boys Season 5, Episode 2.

As it turns out, he survives. Showrunner Eric Kripke confirmed that Jensen Ackles’ character is alive and actually immune to the virus–setting up “the primary MacGuffin of the season.”

“It really turns everything on its head,” Kripke said. “Suddenly, there is a way to survive the virus, and so it becomes a race of who acquires it.”

With Homelander’s intentions in mind, it would be “game over” if he got it first. But if The Boys manage to obtain it, the people they love and everyone fighting for the future may have a chance to survive.

“Can they survive this war? Can they survive this particular virus? And this storyline becomes a big driver of the season,” Kripke added.

Generally, a “MacGuffin” is an object, person, or plot device that drives the story forward. It’s something everyone wants or fights over, motivating the characters’ actions.

In the case of The Boys Season 5, the primary MacGuffin is likely V1, Vought’s first iteration of Compound V, which Homelander is searching for.

V1 could make Homelander effectively immortal, making it the key MacGuffin and the probable source of Soldier Boy’s immunity, as showrunner Eric Kripke revealed.

As one of Vought’s original supers, Soldier Boy may have been injected with V1, which explains why he survives the virus while the Teenage Kix supes in the same room perish.

If Homelander finds V1 and injects it into himself, he would become virtually impossible to defeat, gaining immunity to the virus.

Knowing that Homelander doesn’t yet have the most powerful version of Compound V in his system, this insecurity could trigger the race to find it, as he seeks to protect himself and maintain his dominance.
