If you've tuned in to the first three episodes of The Boys Season 2, there's a good chance that you have already discovered Patton Oswalt's highly anticipated role in the series. But how in the world did the King of Queens star end up with such an unexpected cameo? Showrunner Eric Kripke has revealed that he chose the role for Oswalt because of the comedian's wholesome resume.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers from The Boys Season 2 Episode 2! Proceed with caution!
In Proper Preparation and Planning, The Deep hits rock bottom and decides to go back to the Church of the Collective to try and find inner peace. To do so, he takes a special tea and ends up having hallucinations. Interestingly, his hallucination involves his gills talking to him about self-acceptance. But the best part is that his gills sound a lot like the cooking rat from Ratatouille.
It's an odd role for Oswalt, who had admitted that he was a huge fan of the comics as well as the show, but why did Kripke choose to contact the comedian to provide the voice of The Deep's gills? The showrunner told Collider he wanted to use one of the most recognizable and wholesome voices in a truly bizarre way.
"I took a certain perverse pleasure that the guy who was the lead voice in Ratatouille comes in to voice the Deep's mangina — I mean the guy who was in The Secret Life of Pets 2, a real evergreen superstar when it comes to animated voices. The idea of him being this animated male vagina on this guy's chest, it was really hilarious to me, man," Kripke said.
It's an interesting reason but one that we accept wholeheartedly. After all, it was a complete shock and it was nice to hear Oswalt again.
