The Amazing Spider-Man's Andrew Garfield Says Playing Spider-Man Broke His Heart

Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man initially wasn't regarded by fans as the definitive version of the character but over the years, webheads have grown to appreciate his unorthodox take on Marvel's flagship superhero. This is also the reason why a lot of people are excited about his rumored appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home as it could potentially serve as his redemption story after 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to deliver.

But as awesome as it was playing the web-slinger for two films, Andrew admits that his time as Spider-Man wasn't always that fun and in fact broke his heart. According to him, it also served as his awakening in Hollywood and how the industry truly operates. In an interview with The Guardian, the British actor explains: "I got my heart broken a little bit… I went from being a naive boy to growing up. How could I ever imagine that it was going to be a pure experience? There are millions of dollars at stake and that’s what guides the ship. It was a big awakening and it hurt."

Personally speaking, I loved Garfield's portrayal of Spider-Man and I've always thought his first film was actually pretty good despite it trying to be fresh and experimental. Now, with the rumors of him and fellow Spidey actor Tobey Maguire appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in No Way Home, I can't help but feel ecstatic for what the future could hold for him. I mean, who knows? His involvement in the film could spawn new opportunities for him in the Marvel realm and that sounds exciting.

Spider-Man: No Way Home hits cinemas on December 17, 2021.
