The Acolyte Episode 3 Explores Osha and Mae's Backstory
The entire third episode of The Acolyte titled "Destiny" dealt with the backstory of Osha and Mae when they were young and how they ended up being separated.
The twins were introduced as the daughters of Mother Aniseya, the leader of the witch coven in Brendok, and Mother Koril. They also strongly hinted that they were not conceived traditionally and that Aniseya is not their actual biological parent.
Aniseya and her coven are practitioners of the so-called "thread of life" (their version of the Force) and the twins were being prepared for an ascension ceremony. It was also revealed that the coven was being hunted until they were given the "gift of life" with the twins.
Mae and Osha's ascension ceremony was interrupted by the presence of the four Jedis (Sol, Indara, Torbin, Kelnacca), who offered the twins an opportunity to take the test and potentially join the Jedi Order.
Aniseya asked the twins to intentionally fail the test while Osha had a growing fascination with the Jedi as she expressed her interest. Mae stuck with the plan while Osha admitted that she was tasked to lie so Sol advised her to seize her destiny.
After Mae noticed that her sister lied, she told her mothers about Osha's plan. Despite some convincing from Aniseya, Osha chose to go with the Jedi way.
The episode ended with Mae stealing Osha's invitation to the Jedi Order and burning it. However, the fire seemingly spread throughout the coven's temple and reached the power core, which exploded into a ball of fire and somehow resulted in the death of the members of the coven including Aniseya and Koril.
Osha confronted Mae on a catwalk where they blamed each other for what happened. Mae's side collapsed while Osha was rescued by Sol, who took her to the Jedi ship.
Osha woke up and was told by Sol that Mae's fire destroyed the coven. She was being taken to Coruscant to start training as a padawan. Meanwhile, Mae is in the Bunta tree, looking horrified as she realizes that she may have killed her sister.
