  • Quick Answer: Rumors suggest Supergirl will debut on digital platforms on July 28, 2026, just 32 days after its premiere to mitigate steep box office losses.

DC Studios may make a bold move to offset Supergirl's disappointing box office performance by breaking a major streaming record for the studio.

Since the film premiered in theaters on June 26, it has struggled to gain momentum at the box office, including a steep drop during its second weekend.

With its theatrical run falling short of expectations, could DC turn to an early streaming release to give the movie a second chance?

Supergirl has struggled at the box office despite early projections that it would earn between $40 million and $55 million during its opening weekend from approximately 3,600 theaters.

Instead, the film reportedly earned $13 million on its opening day, including $7.8 million from preview screenings, before debuting with $38 million domestically and $68 million worldwide.

The movie then experienced a steep 76% drop in its second weekend, earning just $9.6 million domestically. As of July 5, it has grossed $57 million in the United States and $99 million worldwide.

With a reported production budget of $170–186 million, the second DC Universe film is estimated to need roughly $315 million worldwide to break even. But based on its current trajectory, industry estimates suggest the studio could face significant losses if the box office does not improve.

The film's underwhelming theatrical performance has been attributed to several possible factors, including mixed early reviews, alleged review bombing, and stiff competition from Toy Story 5, which opened around the same time.

According to recent rumors, Warner Bros. may attempt to offset the film's disappointing theatrical run by giving Supergirl an unusually early digital release as soon as July 28–just 32 days after its theatrical debut.

If that release window proves true, Supergirl would surpass Superman as the fastest DC Studios film to transition from theaters to home release. Superman arrived on HBO Max 35 days after its theatrical debut, premiering on September 19, 2025.

However, as of this writing, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has not commented on Supergirl’s rumored digital release date.

Supergirl is still playing in theaters, but has underperformed at the box office. If the film continues to struggle financially, it could affect the chances of a sequel–assuming there will be one.

Even so, DC Studios remains optimistic about the future of the character.

"While Supergirl didn't meet our box office expectations, it's just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in," DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran told The New York Times.

So, could Supergirl 2 still happen? Although the latest film was designed as a standalone story, director Craig Gillespie believes Kara Zor-El's journey is far from over.

With Milly Alcock's heroine still discovering her place in the world, he said there is plenty of room for another chapter.

"I do think the journey's not complete, so I would love to see how she keeps exploring her own journey. So we'll see," Gillespie told The Hollywood Reporter.

For now, a sequel has not been officially announced. However, fans are expected to see Kara again in her cousin Superman's next film, Man of Tomorrow, continuing her story within the DC Universe.
