Many new fans may not be aware, but Parasyte: The Grey is based on the original manga, Parasyte.

The manga spawned an anime series Parasyte: The Maxim in 2014, and a two-parter live-action film Parasyte: Part 1 and Part 2.

In the original story, Shinichi Izumi is the main character of the story. One night, alien parasites decided to invade Earth by climbing into their ears as they slept.

Shinichi, however, was wearing earphones on the night of their supposed invasion.

Since the parasite couldn't infiltrate his brain, it ended up getting stuck to his right arm, which somewhat turned it into its own weapon and body.

The thing is, Shinichi's brief cameo appearance in the Netflix series seemingly confirms that both worlds are in the same universe!

"This new story taking place in a different location will lead us into a world beyond my imagination," Parasyte's manga writer and artist Hitoshi Iwaaki explained on Netflix Tudum.

The only difference between the two is that the Netflix series is set in Namil, while the manga takes place in Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Japan. And of course, the main characters, too.
