Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2 has finally been released, revealing Dr. Kay’s (Linda Hamilton) plan for Kali (Linnea Berthelsen) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).
After El finds Kali, also known as Eight, inside a secret, secure vault within a military research facility in the Upside Down, Martin Brenner’s (Matthew Modine) former test subject reveals the real reason Dr. Kay was determined to keep both her and her “sister” in the lab.
So why was Kali there, and why did Dr. Kay want Eleven? Read on to find out.
Why Kali Was at the Military Base in the Upside Down

Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2 reveals Kali’s shocking truth about why she was being held at the military base in the Upside Down after finally being reunited with Eleven.
After having her head shaved and repeatedly having her blood taken, Kali learns that her blood was being used for transfusions on several pregnant women.
Dr. Kay hoped that by using Kali’s blood, the unborn babies would inherit the same superpowers she possessed, attempting to revive Dr. Brenner’s Project Indigo, which sought to replicate Henry’s (Jamie Campbell Bower) abilities in new test subjects.
However, Dr. Kay soon discovered that the mothers were barely conscious and, in some cases, dying from the procedure.
Although Dr. Kay initially intended to extract and use Eleven’s blood, she had no choice but to rely on Kali instead, as she was unable to locate or capture Eleven.
Dr. Kay needed the blood of a former test subject to continue her experiments on pregnant women and create new “weapons” through their unborn children. She knew that the only way to create someone as powerful as Henry was by using Eleven’s blood – something she could not obtain.
What Is Eleven’s Role in Dr. Kay’s Plan?

While Project Indigo had several test subjects, Eleven was the only one whose powers matched Henry’s level.
For Dr. Kay to successfully revive Project Indigo, she needed Eleven’s blood for transfusions into pregnant women. Kali ultimately reveals this plan to Eleven, explaining why Dr. Kay and the military were relentlessly searching for her.
Knowing that Eleven’s telekinetic abilities originated from the transfusion of Henry’s blood into her mother, Terry Ives (Aimee Mullins), Dr. Kay wanted Eleven to become the next Henry. This also explains why she would not allow the military to harm Eleven if they ever managed to capture her.
Stranger Things Season 5 Volumes 1 and 2 are now streaming on Netflix, while Volume 3 will be released on December 31.
