As we're approaching the release of the fifth season of Stranger Things, you might be curious to know which essential episodes you need to rewatch before watching the final chapter.
The upcoming conclusion of the hit series will wrap up the Upside Down mythology that they've been exploring since the beginning. However, with so many episodes that are available to rewatch and the long gap from the fourth season, you may want to know which key episodes are important for the final season.
Fortunately, we have a guide for you.
What Stranger Things Episodes Do You Need to Rewatch Before Season 5?

The Duffer Brothers recently shared with The Hollywood Reporter the four essential Stranger Things episodes that fans need to rewatch in preparation for the release of the final season.
They all included key storylines and moments that will be important when the story unfolds in the final season. Here is the list of episodes that you need to rewatch, according to the creators:
- Season 2, Episode 4 - "Will the Wise"
- Season 2, Episode 6 - "The Spy"
- Season 4, Episode 7 - "The Massacre at Hawkins Lab"
- Season 4, Episode 9 - "The Piggyback"
"Season two is when we really started to build out the mythology and started to dive into everything, and how this was going to be an ongoing [series]," Matt Duffer explained.
"That’s where we started to really plant the seeds for the mythology, and I think probably that’s why that is as relevant as it is. Season four is also highly relevant — ‘Massacre at Hawkins Lab’ is a good one."
Ross Duffer added, "That [episode] starts unveiling some of the Upside Down mythology and starts giving some answers, and, of course, all the stuff with Henry and Eleven continues to resonate throughout season five. Those are some good ones to revisit."
While you can obviously rewatch all four seasons of the series so far, the four episodes listed above are the ones that you can specifically rewatch if you want to refresh the important plotlines and mythology for the final season.
What to Expect in the Final Season of Stranger Things
According to the logline for the final season of Stranger Things, set in the fall of 1987, "Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown. Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding."
"As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time."
The final season will be released across three phases: Volume 1 (four episodes) on November 26, Volume 2 (three episodes) on Christmas Day, December 25, and Volume 3 (the final episode) on New Year's Eve, December 31.
