It's the end of an era. As Stranger Things season 5 is about to close the chapter on Hawkins, the trailer has led fans to wonder: Does Jonathan Byers die in the series finale?

Here's how the teaser left fans on the edge of their seats.

Why Do Stranger Things Fans Believe Jonathan Byers Could Die in Season 5?

Thrilling series finales are usually filled with heartwrenching goodbyes to wrap things up for the audiences, but could Stranger Things season 5 be plotting something for Jonathan Byers and Nancy Wheeler?

This time, Jonathan narrates on the fifth season's trailer: "After what we've been through. This thing... it ties us together. Forever."

Considering how rare we get to see Jonathan in the spotlight, this teaser's detail suggests two things that could make or break the fans' theories: Jonathan either survives or dies trying alongside Nancy.

It remains to be seen whether Jonathan could end up being one of the major sacrifices by the end of the series, but two shots imply the theory.

One is when he was shown having a heart-to-heart moment with Nancy, while the other is as seen in the photo above, where Nancy is literally washing blood off her hands. Is it Jonathan's? Her own?

"They can't do that to Joyce and Will. Joyce losing a son for real would be [terrible] too. And Will has had enough trauma; his losing his brother would be another blow for him," one fan said.

Another surmised that the death would be a cheap ploy to make way for a rekindling between Nancy and Steve: "Having Jonathan die so Nancy and Steve can be together is incredibly cheap, and no decent writer would do that."

What Else Does the Series Finale Teaser Tell Fans?

The Stranger Things trailer for season 5 may not tell much, but it does include snippets of clues we can deduce for the upcoming finale.

Steve and Robin seem to have the reins on how Hawkins can once again connect to the Upside Down, hence why they're tinkering with the radio.

The four main kids of the story, Will, Mike, Lucas, and Dustin, reunite for the last time to take down Vecna, with the help of Hopper and Eleven, and not to mention, Max.

Though unconscious, Lucas is left up to the task of keeping Max safe as the hospital gets bombarded with the creatures from the Upside Down.

Lastly, there is unfortunately no sign of Eddie Munson potentially coming back from his grave. The only scene we get of him is Dustin visiting his grave, which had the words "Burn in Hell" written in blood on it.
