Star Wars: The Last Jedi Actor Thinks The Oscar’s Popular Film Award Is “Pretty Stupid”

Last week the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a brand new category, the Outstanding Achievement in Popular film. While some considered it an opportunity for blockbuster films, a lot of industry insiders criticized the Oscar's new category.

Now, Star Wars sequel trilogy star Oscar Isaac joins the critics, calling the Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film category something that "seems pretty stupid."

Isaac just recently spoke with USA Today to help promote his upcoming political thriller movie, Operation Finale and during his interview, the Star Wars actor was asked to weigh in on the brand new Oscar awards category. As it turns out, Hollywood's other Oscar isn't a big fan of the new Oscar Award.

"It seems pretty stupid," Isaac told the publication. "I don't really understand it. I haven't read the rules of the thing. It seems pretty dumb, but I guess that's above my pay grade."

While Isaac has yet to receive his own Oscar award, he's had his own commendations, winning a Golden Globe award for his HBO series Show Me A Hero and a Golden Globe nomination for best actor for Inside Llewyn Davis. He also served as an Oscar presenter alongside his Star Wars: The Last Jedi castmates Kelly Marie Tran, BB-8, and the legendary Mark Hamill. He also serves as a voter for the Academy, joining the organization since 2016. So Isaac knows what he's talking about when he says the new Popular Film award is just too much.

Lucasfilm's next Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Episode IX is set to premiere on December 20, 2019.
