Star Trek fans everywhere went crazy when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was announced, seemingly giving fans a show that seemingly skews towards the tone of the classic shows, whereas Discovery is more like the J.J. Abrams movies. However, COVID-19 has put almost everything at jeopardy, with pretty much every show and film delayed until things get better. It seems like Alex Kurtzman is hoping things are better next year since that's when Strange New Worlds will start shooting.
In an interview with Gold Derby, Kurtzman discussed how difficult post-production on Discovery has been due to COVID-19 and then brought up pre-production for the other Star Trek shows. When discussing the other projects, he quickly revealed that Strange New Worlds will start shooting sometime next year, assuming things get better. Then again, this is a sci-fi series so they could just film in front of a green screen with limited crew members.
Considering how excited everyone is for Strange New Worlds, we really hope that this new Star Trek show starts shooting next year and maybe even comes out then as well, though I think it will get a 2022 release personally. The show definitely has a lot of appeal to Star Trek fans since promo material has teased it being more in-line with the classic series but we'll have to wait and see.
