Spider-Man: Far From Home star Zendaya might not be playing the comic book version of Mary Jane in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but she's decided to pay homage to the character and her iconic redheaded hairstyle.
Zendaya was recently spotted with red hair, and one enthusiastic fan decided to take to Twitter to talk about the actress' new hair color, wondering whether the hairstyle meant that the singer was really going to play Disney's new Ariel in the studio's live-action Little Mermaid.
As exciting as it might sound to see Zendaya as the live-action version of Ariel, the actress debunks this theory, saying that she simply dyed her hair to pay homage to MJ in Far From Home.
While most fans were hoping that Zendaya would be revealed as Mary Jane Watson in Marvel's first Spider-Man standalone movie, Homecoming, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was quick to clear up the story. Zendaya simply plays the character Michelle, one of Peter Parker's (Tom Holland) classmate's who eventually becomes his love interest in the film series.
Right now we're not quite sure how far along Peter and Michelle's relationship is, but based on the trailer for Far From Home, it seems like the two are getting along just fine. Who knows, maybe Marvel will put in a twist by bringing in an actual Mary Jane Watson into the franchise. Wouldn't it be interesting to see a love triangle between Michelle MJ, Mary Jane MJ, and Peter Parker? But maybe that's just wishful thinking.
Spider-Man: Far From Home is set for release on July 2, 2019.
