Disney has hit pause on the development of the live-action remake of Tangled following the disappointing box office performance of Snow White.
For the past 15 years, Disney has been producing live-action remakes of their beloved animated films to mostly box office success. However, the responses to some of the recent releases have been tepid and failed to match the pre-pandemic results.
Disney's Tangled Live-Action Remake on Hold
It was recently reported that Disney has decided to hit pause on the development of the live-action remake of Tangled.
The news comes as the live-action remake of Snow White bombed at the box office and is expected to have a financial loss of $115 million. So far, it has only grossed $146.5 million worldwide out of $240-270 million production budget.
The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey was on board to direct the film with Thor: Love and Thunder co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson penning the screenplay.
There were no actors attached to the project, but names such as Sabrina Carpenter were rumored to have been approached by Disney to potentially star in the live-action remake.
While the film might still resume its development sometime in the future, this is a sign that Disney is now having second thoughts on their theatrical plans, and Snow White's performance proved that live-action remakes are no longer reliable hits.
The Future of Disney Live-Action Remakes
The news regarding Tangled is a sign that Disney is potentially reconsidering their plans for live-action remakes of their animated classics.
They still have two live-action remakes in their future slate: Lilo and Stitch this summer and Moana next year.
While both titles have the potential to be box office hits given their long-time popularity since the originals were released, the tepid reception to some of their recent releases indicates that they are running out of gas on their live-action remake plans.
After all, they are running out of beloved animated classics that they can remake, and Snow White also proved that even an IP of this caliber is not invincible to failure.
