We already know that Sigourney Weaver will be back in Avatar: The Way of Water. However, it has been repeatedly pointed out that Weaver will not reprise her role as Dr. Grace Augustine. So who is Weaver playing in Avatar 2? The first image and details about her new character have just been revealed and it looks like she is closely connected to Jake and Neytiri!
The new details were shared by Empire who also dropped two images of Sigourney Weaver's character Kiri. Interestingly, the one of the stills actually shows Kiri alongside a video of Dr. Grace Augustine before her consciousness was transferred to her Na'vi avatar.
The outlet also confirms that Kiri is a young Na'vi who happens to be the adopted teenage daughter of Jake and Neytiri. We're not sure how it all works out but considering that Grace's soul had joined the Tree of Souls, there is a possibility that she had been reincarnated into a Na'vi child.
Interestingly, Sigourney Weaver was thrilled to play a new character, especially a teenager and was happy to take on the role in the James Cameron movie.
“I think we all pretty much remember what we were feeling as adolescents,” she told Empire. “I certainly do. I was 5’ 10” or 5’ 11” when I was 11. I felt strongly that Kiri would feel awkward a lot of the time. She’s searching for who she is. I was thrilled to be given that challenge by Jim.”
In turn, Cameron spoke about letting Weaver join a workshop with teenage girls to get into character and how it helped her transform. “Sigourney just became younger,” Cameron said. “She looked younger, she had more energy, and she never quite stepped out of Kiri for our whole capture period. She had a glow on her face and lightness in her step and a fun spirit.”
We're truly excited about the new character and we can't wait to meet Kiri later this year.
Avatar: The Way of Water will premiere on December 16, 2022.
