Shelley Duvall, best known for The Shining, admittedly experienced difficulty filming on set under Eyes Wide Shut and 2001: A Space Odyssey director Stanley Kubrick's radar.
One particular scene she can never seem to forget is the one where she had to cry "for weeks on end."
The Iconic Scream Queen Did Not Have A Grand Time on The Shining
Duvall rose to the top in Hollywood the moment she debuted as Jack Torrance's wife, Wendy, in the critically acclaimed film adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining novel.
However, the actress previously revealed that filming the cult classic had proven to be quite a challenge.
In a 1981 interview with People, Duvall shared that director Stanley Kubrick had her "crying 12 hours a day for weeks on end." While The Shining may have brought her fame by starring in the acclaimed film, the Popeye actress seemingly had no time to breathe.
According to the report, the director "forced her to cry for 12 hours each day for months", leaving Duvall to describe filming for The Shining as "almost unbearable."
"[Kubrick] doesn't print anything until at least the 35th take," Duvall added, "Thirty-five takes, running and crying and carrying a little boy, it gets hard. And full performance from the first rehearsal. That's difficult."
What struck Stanley Kubrick to take in Shelley Duvall for the wife in The Shining is the fact that she was "great at crying", as the actress recalled how he hired her.
He saw her potential after Duvall's graphic stillborn baby birth-giving scene in the 1977 thriller flick, 3 Women.
As far as Duvall's experience went, she shared that, listening to sad songs on a Sony Walkman to cry for the scenes led her body to rebel, as though telling her, "Stop doing this to me. I don't want to cry every day."
Still, she did note that Kubrick was "very warm and friendly to me" and spent a lot of time with Jack Nicholson and her to "talk to for hours while the crew waited."
The Shining star Shelley Duvall passed away at 75 on Thursday, July 11, 2024. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she died in her sleep in Blanco, Texas out of complications from diabetes.
