The Shining star Shelley Duvall made her acting comeback in a 2023 Werewolf flick prior to her death. Duvall, who left Hollywood for 20 years, returned in a horror movie, unbeknownst to anyone that it would be her last.
Why The Shining Star Returned to Acting After 20 Years
Shelley Duvall, who died on July 11 at 75 years old, retired from Hollywood in the early 2000s after starring in The Shining, Popeye, and Nashville.
According to People, Duvall's brother was diagnosed with spinal cancer, leading her to move back to Texas and look after him, "It's the longest sabbatical I ever took," she said, adding that she left for important reasons, "To get in touch with my family again."
By October 2022, Duvall was confirmed that she was set to make a cameo in The Forest Hills, the horror film by director Scott Goldberg that follows a man named Rico (played by Chiko Mendez) who starts "descending into madness."
The main character also happens to struggle to keep his relationship intact with his Mama (played by Shelley Duvall), whose first line in the trailer was, "You're a f*cking murderer, Rico."
"It was fun, very satisfying," Duvall previously shared her newfound experience of remote filming, noting that it was the "first time I ever worked with a director who was on FaceTime."
The 80s icon's last film role was in 2002's Manna From Heaven before she packed it up and left to prioritize her family.
Upon her return to Hollywood through The Forest Hills, she couldn't be more excited to have her time on screen again, "Acting again — it's so much fun. It enriches your life."
Shelley Duvall died at 75 on Thursday, July 11, 2024. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she died in her sleep in Blanco, Texas out of complications from diabetes.
"My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us," Duvall's life partner since 1989, Dan Gilroy, said, "Too much suffering lately, now she's free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley."
