Early next year will see a face-off between two Captain Marvels from opposing comic book camps. One movie follows Marvel's first superheroine Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel, while the other follows a young boy who can turn into a god in Shazam!. It's been a while since we got some news on Shazam!, but thanks to ComicBookMovie, we have a new synopsis on the film:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson's (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard (Djimon Hounsou). Still, a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he'll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).
Of course, I'm a tad bummed that we don't know much about Sivana at all, but I'm hoping that director David F. Sanbderg has something good up his sleeve. After the MCU had been criticized for coming up with some cookie-cutter villains, it kind of seems like a challenge to DC to up their game. So far, we've gotten Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor and Jared Leto's Joker—both of which have not been well-received by audiences.
If anything, Deadshot (Will Smith) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) have come out as fan favorites, but when it comes to their films, their fewer villains and more of morally ambiguous heroes.
With Shazam! set to come out early next year, hopefully, DC releases a new trailer this December. It would be great if they could release it close to Aquaman's premiere, but maybe they would want to hold it until all the hype to be had will be on Shazam!.
I know I'm hyped.
Shazam! is set to hit theaters April 5, 2019.
