For the first time in more than 25 years, Bikini Bottom's resident scientist is the star of a SpongeBob SquarePants movie, and the trailer reveals new details about her.
Sandy Cheeks is revealed to be a flying squirrel, with her “jiggly arm flaps” saving her and SpongeBob from plunging to their deaths when they decide to rescue their friends.
In Saving Bikini Bottom, the residents of Bikini Bottom are extracted from the ocean by a marine biology lab called B.O.O.T.S., located in Galveston, Texas.
According to Mr. Krabs, the villains plan to sell the captured sea creatures, including him, as pets. To save her adopted community, Sandy will enlist the help of her family.
Aside from Ma and Pa Cheeks who were previously introduced in the animated series, her twin Randy will make his first appearance in the movie, as well as two younglings named Rowdy and Rosie. Sandy is also revealed to still have her Granny around.

Why is Sandy Leading the Rescue in Saving Bikini Bottom?
Sandra Jennifer Olivia Cheeks, aka Sandy, is an American squirrel who has moved to Bikini Bottom to learn more about water-dwelling animals. She wears a diving suit and lives in a treedome to survive underwater.
Known to their community as a competitive, intelligent, and thrill-seeking land creature, Sandy may be the best fit for the role, intent to save her friends despite the uncertainties waiting for her and SpongeBob at the surface.
Strangely enough, Sandy hails from the same state as the marine lab, wears boots, and has been involved in studying underwater creatures, prompting a possible connection with the evildoers.
Whether she is related to the lab or not remains to be seen as Saving Bikini Bottom premieres on Netflix in August 2024.
