The new anime series Sakamoto Days has already hit major streaming records ever since it premiered on Netflix earlier this month.
Despite the mixed early reactions before its premiere, it was one of the highly-anticipated anime releases of 2025 due to the massive popularity of the manga and the talent involved in the making of the series.
Sakamoto Days Dominates the Netflix Streaming Chart
Three episodes into its run so far, Sakamoto Days has already broken streaming records on Netflix, and it is now the streamer's most-watched original anime since they started releasing viewership reports.
The anime managed to have 8.6 million views since its debut on January 11. It easily beats Season 2 of Baki Hanma, which previously held the record with 6 million views.
Overall, Sakamoto Days is currently the second most popular non-English series on Netflix. It is only behind season 2 of Squid Game which currently takes the top spot.
This is an impressive record for Sakamoto Days considering that it already managed to take the top spot despite only airing three episodes so far and there is no doubt that it will gain more views in the coming weeks.
It also helps that Sakamoto Days is already a popular title with a massive fanbase. While it was polarizing before the premiere, perhaps it also made more people curious to see whether the series would end up living up to the hype.
What is Sakamoto Days About?
Sakamoto Days tells the story of the ultimate assassin, Taro Sakamoto, who is feared by villains and admired by other hitmen. One day, he falls in love and out of shape, preoccupied with marriage, retirement, and fatherhood.
Despite that, he’s still armed with superhuman skill and strength, and during extreme situations, he loses his extra weight and gains twice the power he had before.
When his past catches up, Sakamoto must embrace his previous life again and work with his comrades to protect his family from the looming bands of assassins.
The first season is being split into two parts with Part 2 currently slated to air in July later this year.
