Robert Downey Jr. reportedly had one major condition when he was asked to return to the MCU as Doctor Doom.

To the shock of many fans, Marvel Studios recently announced during their San Diego Comic-Con Hall H presentation that Downey will be returning to the MCU as the fan-favorite villain in the upcoming Avengers movies.

It remains to be seen whether he will be playing a Tony Stark variant who becomes Doctor Doom or not, but the shocking decision that Marvel and Downey made has sparked a lot of discussions among fans.

A recent report laid out the details of how Downey agreed to make his MCU return as Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers movies.

As it turns out, the Oscar winner had one condition to make his MCU return happen: the Russo Brothers would be directing both installments (their return was also confirmed during the Hall H presentation).

Downey is also expected to receive a massive payday for his involvement in the upcoming Avengers movies. His deal includes perks such as private jet travel, dedicated security, and a whole “trailer encampment."

Meanwhile, the Russo Brothers will earn around $80 million to direct both films and they have performance escalators that kick in if the box office reaches the $750 million and $1 billion thresholds. They will also produce the films under their AGBO production company banner.

Production for Doomsday is slated to begin in London around the second quarter of 2025.

While the fan conversations regarding Downey's shocking MCU return are still divisive, it is clear that everyone on board is committed to taking the risk and all we can hope for now is it will all pay off once we see the first installment in two years.

Avengers: Doomsday will arrive in theaters in May 2026 while Avengers: Secret Wars will be released in May 2027.
