  • Quick Answer: The Resident Evil reboot runs for 1 hour and 35 minutes, delivering a fast-paced, focused survival horror story centered on a single protagonist.

AMC has revealed the runtime for the upcoming Resident Evil reboot, and while some fans may be disappointed that it's shorter than expected, that could actually be good news.

Director Zach Cregger has previously teased that the film will take a fresh approach to the franchise, doing things differently from its predecessors. So, how does a shorter runtime make sense?

The AMC Theatres listing has revealed more details about the upcoming Resident Evil reboot.

The film is not only rated R and set to premiere on September 18, but it also has a surprisingly short runtime of just 1 hour and 35 minutes.

Considering Resident Evil is a major franchise and many modern blockbusters now run well over two hours, it's surprising to see the reboot clock in at just over 90 minutes.

While that may initially disappoint some fans, the shorter runtime actually makes sense.

Director Zach Cregger previously confirmed that the film would follow a single character "from Point A to Point B," meaning the story will center on one protagonist's journey from beginning to end rather than constantly switching between multiple characters or storylines.

With such a focused narrative, the film is expected to hit the ground running and maintain its momentum throughout. The shorter runtime also supports Cregger's vision of delivering a fast-paced, action-packed experience from start to finish.

At just over an hour and a half, the reboot won't have much room for unnecessary filler or slow moments added simply to extend its length. Instead, it can devote its time to telling a tight, focused story.

At a time when many blockbuster films exceed two hours, the Resident Evil reboot's lean runtime could ultimately be a refreshing change of pace.

What Is the Resident Evil Reboot About?

Resident Evil

The Resident Evil reboot will tell an original story set parallel to the events of Resident Evil 2.

The film follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), an original character and medical courier whose routine drug delivery takes a terrifying turn when he becomes trapped in Raccoon City during the viral outbreak.

Because the movie isn't a direct adaptation of Capcom's iconic game, it won't feature established protagonists like Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine. Instead, Bryan must survive the night on his own as monstrous, mutated creatures overrun the city.

The reboot will closely mirror the games' survival horror mechanics, with Bryan beginning his journey armed only with a pistol before scavenging for better weapons, supplies, and resources as he fights to stay alive.

From its fast-paced structure to its isolated atmosphere, the film aims to capture the feeling of the early Resident Evil games. It will also feature camera angles inspired by the games' third-person perspective, immersing viewers in Bryan's desperate fight for survival.

"I'm aiming to make a Resident Evil movie. That's the whole goal here. I want to make my celebration of the Resident Evil games," Cregger said (via ScreenRant). "It's going to be a Zach Cregger movie because it can't not be. It's coming out of my brain, but everything I'm doing is to honor the games."

Resident Evil reboot is set to hit theaters on September 18, 2026.
