Columbia Pictures has finally released a first look at the creepy zombie in Zach Cregger’s highly anticipated take on Resident Evil

Fresh from the success of the now cult-classic Barbarian and the Oscar-winning Weapons, the emerging horror director is about to make his own spin on the iconic game franchise

So while the previously released teaser teases what’s to come, here’s a full look at Resident Evil’s iconic the Infected.

What Does the Zombie Look Like in Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil

Zach Cregger's zombie appears to draw strong inspiration from the undead in the early Resident Evil games, favoring the classic T-virus infected over the heavily mutated creatures introduced in later entries.

With its vacant expression, subtle signs of decay, and blood-smeared mouth, the creature looks like an ordinary person transformed into a flesh-eating corpse after succumbing to the T-virus. The design closely resembles the zombies that stalked players through the halls of the Spencer Mansion before later terrorizing the streets of Raccoon City.

Its appearance also aligns with Cregger's goal of capturing the tense, oppressive atmosphere that defined the original games. However, despite featuring the undead, the filmmaker doesn't consider his take on Resident Evil to be a typical "zombie movie."

"This movie doesn't utilize zombies that much," he told The Direct. "It's much more focused on the weird-creature stuff than on the zombies. There are only really two scenes, maybe three actually, where there's proper zombie stuff going on, and two of those three are in this trailer."

Judging by his comments, Cregger intends to spotlight more than just zombies, embracing the broader horrors of the Resident Evil universe that have captivated gamers and moviegoers since the franchise debuted in 1996.

"You have the opportunity for the T-virus to do all these fascinating things to the human body and the world around you, so to just limit it to zombies feels like a squandered opportunity, so I tried to vary it up," he continued.

Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who becomes caught in a viral mutagen outbreak while making a delivery in Raccoon City, forcing him to fight for survival.

Although the film is set in modern times and unfolds during an alternate version of the events of Resident Evil 2, Zach Cregger has clarified that it is neither a direct adaptation nor a spinoff. Instead, it tells an original story set within the universe of the games.

"The concept here is that we're following an idiot," Cregger explained. "Not that he's stupid, but he's not your typical game character, with no combat skills whatsoever and completely inept at survival. Bryan is very much an everyman who happens to be burdened with this kind of sacred mission that's going to take him into the heart of everything. It's kind of like Frodo going into Mordor."

By making Bryan an ordinary person rather than a seasoned fighter, Cregger aims to honor the franchise's survival-horror roots. Much like players stepping into the original games for the first time, Bryan has little idea how to survive a zombie outbreak and must rely on his instincts, limited resources, and quick thinking instead of overwhelming firepower.

The approach shows the tense, resource-driven gameplay that made Resident Evil a landmark series and could make the 2026 film feel like one of the most faithful adaptations of the franchise's survival-horror experience.
