It's been nearly a month since the K-drama, Queenmaker, was released on Netflix. But avid fans are already eager to know whether the show will be getting a second season and whether it needs one.
Shortly after the show came out, it climbed to the top 10 spots in 45 countries and has even been a top show for non-English series on Netflix.
With a promising reception from the audience and its cliffhanger ending, we're eager to know if the show is coming back at all. And we're curious to know what happens to Hwang Do Hee (played by Kim Hee Ae) in the end.
So has Queenmaker Season 2 been announced?
Here's what we know at this point.
Will There Be a Queenmaker Season 2?
At this time of writing, Queenmaker has not yet been renewed for a second season. But this is not something unusual.
The show has only been available to stream on the service for less than a month so it's still early for Netflix to decide on the show's future. But if the K-drama gets renewed, it'll be a long wait for the show to return on Netflix.
To compare: the first season started filming in early December 2021. Production finished by late June 2022.
And even then, the show did not get released until April 14, 2023.
If Queenmaker Season 2 gets renewed now, the earliest that the show could get released on Netflix will be by the spring or summer of 2024.
Of course, this depends if they already have a script lined up.
Does Queenmaker Need a Second Season?
And again, there's the issue of whether Queenmaker needs a second season or not. The show was directed by Oh Jin Seok and written by Moon Ji Young.
With just the first season alone, the show was able to complete the story and give a satisfactory ending. Even with a cliffhanger ending that got its viewers wondering about the identity of the person who paid a visit to Do Hee in prison, the show doesn't need a second season.
We also learned that Do Hee plotted to get sacrifice herself and get imprisoned just so the matriarch of the Eunsung Group, Chairwoman Son Young Shim (played by Seo Yi Sook) could be investigated too. There was no other way for Do Hee to get the revenge she needed from her former employer.
Still, it would be good to see Do Hee return and kick the behinds of her enemies in a well-calculated manner. Not to mention, we're hoping she reunites with her ex-husband, Ma Jung Seok (played by Kim Tae Hoon).
If a second season gets ordered, we'll likely know who the mystery visitor was who personally came to see Do Hee in prison and asked her for help. As seen in the show, the man has a security team waiting for him outside, which suggests he's a very important man.
Chairwoman Son could also be plotting her revenge against Do Hee. So that's another story arc to focus on should Queenmaker return for a second season.
And finally, Do Hee still needs to avenge her father's untimely death. After all, she now knows it was Carl Yoon (played by Kyeong Yeong Lee) who was responsible for everything.
There's no way Do Hee will just let him go without punishment.
Who Will Return in Queenmaker Season 2?
With regards to who will be returning in Queenmaker Season 2, there will likely be new characters to introduce in the show. But these are the ones that could return:
- Kim Hee Ae (as Hwang Do Hee)
- Seo Yi Sook (as Son Young Shim)
- Kim Tae Hoon (as Ma Jung Seok)
- Saebyuk Kim (as Eun Chae Ryeong)
- Yoon Ji Hye (as Eun Seo Jin)
- Kyeong Yeong Lee (as Carl Yoon)
