Prince Charles just received an additional role and title. The Prince of Wales took over his late father, Prince Philip's Duke of Edinburgh, title over a year after the latter's passing.
Prince Charles Named The New Duke Of Edinburgh
The Prince of Wales was bestowed a new role over a year after the death of his father, Prince Philip. The future king has just been named the new patron of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, one of the oldest surgical establishments in the world.
Queen Elizabeth's late husband and Prince Charles' father previously held the title, and he was highly praised by the College for being its patron for six decades.
Michael Griffin, the President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, welcomed Prince Charles as its new patron, saying it is a "privilege" and honor to have the heir apparent. Prince Charles is known as the Duke of Rothesay in Scotland, and Griffin referred to the Prince of Wales with the said title.
"It is a privilege to welcome HRH The Duke of Rothesay as Patron of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh," Griffin said as quoted by Express.
"The Duke of Edinburgh played a very significant part in the College’s history during His Royal Highness’ 66 years as Patron, which we recognised in 2015 by constructing the Prince Philip Building."
Griffin acknowledged Prince Philip's work as its previous patron, especially his extraordinary engagement with the Fellows and officers at the opening of the building and throughout his patronage. The late royal also took great interest in the surgical profession and its advancement in patient care.
"We very much look forward to working with The Duke of Rothesay," he concluded.
Other Royals Beside Prince Charles Who Could Have Inherited The Title
Before the Duke of Edinburgh title was officially bestowed to Prince Charles, there were other royals who could potentially receive the patronage too. According to Express, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, had a shot of inheriting the title. Prince Edward closely worked with his father on the patronage's Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
"That Prince Edward will become The Duke of Edinburgh in the next reign was his father's and is his mother's wishes and Prince Charles won't go against those," Queen's former press secretary Dickie Arbiter said per Express. "It won't happen immediately, but by 2029, when Edward turns 65, it will. Time for speculation, without substance, to cease."
Prince George is also likely to get the title because it is traditionally bestowed by the monarch on the heir to the throne. Prince Louis also has a chance to inherit the title if it is vacant, depending on the monarch.
