Petition For Brie Larson to Step Down As Captain Marvel Gains Thousands of Signatures

Despite the success of Captain Marvel, Brie Larson is yet to endear herself to the entire Marvel community. There is a petition going around for the actress to step down from the role.

An individual by the name of Spike Valentine wants Larson to give the Captain Marvel stint to a gay woman of color. The petitioner believes this will be the best way Larson can prove she is truly an "ally of social justice."

Valentine wants Monica Rambeau in the role "instead of white-washing characters for the benefit of the straight, white men running Disney." In the comics, Rambeau, who was portrayed by Akira Akbar in the Captain Marvel film, was the first female version of the character. The Carol Danvers iteration officially took the mantle in 2012 after dropping the Ms. Marvel moniker. She has been Captain Marvel ever since.

Larson's campaign for more women and diversity in film is no secret. The Oscar winning actress hasn't been shy in expressing her opinions throughout the promotions and marketing of the Captain Marvel movie as well. In the process, she's drawn the ire of a massive segment of the fan base.

Larson gets the honor of playing the first female superhero lead in the MCU, which opened up a huge platform for her to make the actual changes that she hopes to see. She continued on during Avengers: Endgame press junkets, where she expressed that things still aren't moving fast enough in that direction.

"I'm happy to be on the forefront of the normalization of this type of content and to prove once again that representation matters. Diverse storytelling matters, the female experience matters, and these are markers...I don't understand how you could think that a certain type of person isn't allowed to be a superhero. So to me it's like, we gotta move faster. But I'm always wanting to move faster with this stuff."

Is there anything that could come out of this petition? Well, it is gaining quite some traction. Just yesterday, it had just around 9,000. More than 13,200 people have now signed the petition at the time of writing, only a few hundred signatures away to its goal of 14,000.

At the moment, Larson is still set to be the new lead of MCU, with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige excited for a new era of superhero cinema with the actress at the forefront.
