One Piece fans don’t just have the anime’s Egghead arc to look forward to. Soon, Eiichiro Oda’s Monsters anime will also finally be released on Netflix in January.
This upcoming anime was initially announced a few months ago. Now, Netflix confirmed that it will stream this OVA globally during the Winter 24 season.
Alongside its release announcement, a new key visual and character illustrations were shared for the anime. However, fans will need to wait a bit more before they see this new project in its full animated glory.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1’s Sunghoo Park Is Directing Monsters
As previously revealed, this upcoming anime is an adaptation of the Monsters one-shot by One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda. The original one-shot was released as part of the Wanted! short story collection.
Instead of Toei Animation handling animation duties, this series is being produced by E&H production, a studio co-founded by Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 director Sunghoo Park.
As this is one of the studio’s first major projects, Park is directing the new OVA. This marks his first major directorial project since the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie.
There’s no trailer for it yet, so Park’s animation work hasn’t been shown off. The anime did get a new visual, which you can see here:
Aside from Monsters, Park is also working on two upcoming titles at his studio.
One of these is Ninja Kamui, an anime that’s being made in cooperation with Sola Entertainment. It is set to be released next year on Toonami.
Park is also working on Project Bullet/Bullet, though there are not a lot of details for that anime so far.
Eiichiro Oda’s Monsters Gets Official English Title, Release Date
Along with its Netflix premiere, the anime’s proper title was also revealed. In English, the anime is officially titled Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation.
Netflix also shared new character visuals for the show’s cast. These include art for Ryuma, Cyrano, Flare, D.R., and Dragon.
One Piece fans may find some of the characters familiar. They’re right as Ryuma is a legendary swordsman who appeared in One Piece’s Thriller Bark arc.
It’s not clear if this anime is part of the One Piece canon. Whatever its canon status is, the fact that it’s a story by Oda should make it a must-see for long-time fans.
Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation will be released in January 2024.
