The new Magic: The Gathering fairy Planeswalker card from the forthcoming expansion Throne of Eldraine has been revealed, and it's called "Oko, Thief of Crowns".
Wizards of the Coast and Forbes have revealed the blue/green Planeswalker card and it has an ability that reveals a mysterious new mechanic: "Food Token".
+2: Create a Food token
+1: Target artifact or creature loses all abilities and becomes a green Elk creature with base power and toughness 3/3
-5: Exchange control of target artifact or creature you control and target creature an opponent controls with power 3 or less.
Wizards of the Coast hasn't revealed the "Food Token" mechanic yet but expect the company to explain how it works soon. For a 3-mana cost Planeswalker card, the +1 ability looks pretty strong but its ultimate ability is underwhelming even if it's easy to get 5 loyalty with this card. Oko's last two abilities are references to his talent as a shapeshifter. You can find out more details about Oko's character here.
Forbes also received an image that features the card alongside a cryptic graphic with the large number 12. It reminds viewers to watch twitch.tv/magic on Wednesday, September 4, probably for the Throne of Eldraine special viewing event.
Oko's story will be featured in the first Throne of Eldraine ebook, Throne of Eldraine: The Wildered Quest by Kate Elliott. Recent spoilers also revealed that Garruk is in the story.
Throne of Eldraine, the 82nd Magic expansion, is set to release on October 4. Prerelease events will take place on September 27 to 29.
