  • Quick Answer: The One Piece anime remake premieres in February 2027, covering the East Blue Saga in seven highly polished, filler-free episodes spanning roughly 300 minutes.

Netflix has finally released the official teaser for The One Piece, its upcoming remake of Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling manga produced by WIT Studio.

The new anime adaptation retells the story currently being adapted by the long-running One Piece anime, which has been on the air for 26 years and now spans more than 1,100 episodes across 21 seasons.

Since both anime adaptations tell the same beloved pirate adventure, how does The One Piece differ from the original anime?

Netflix’s The One Piece promises to deliver a fresh yet familiar experience through cutting-edge animation as it reimagines Luffy’s adventures in the East Blue Saga.

However, beyond its enhanced visuals, the remake also aims to address several issues associated with Toei Animation’s adaptation, including its original 4:3 aspect ratio, slow pacing, and high episode count caused by filler content.

To that end, WIT Studio intends to improve upon these aspects as it retells the adventures of Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates.

“The reason we decided to remake One Piece is something Eiichiro Oda said,” WIT Studio producer George Wada told Ai Show. “He said that One Piece has become very long and full of details since it started so long ago. The new generation watching modern productions may not feel the same excitement toward the old animation.”

According to Wada, Oda regretted that the original anime had become difficult for newer audiences to approach and wanted a new generation of viewers to discover and follow the story. This inspired WIT Studio to recreate One Piece using modern techniques better suited to today’s audience.

That said, Wada emphasized that WIT would not simply recreate the original anime scene by scene. Instead, he promised a version that would be “dense and impactful, without unnecessary stretching.”

“It will combine visual enjoyment, strong storytelling, and flawless pacing,” he continued.

With WIT Studio known for acclaimed series such as Attack on Titan and Spy × Family, the studio is aiming to bring the same level of quality to The One Piece.

“These are very distinctive creations,” Wada added. “We want to approach One Piece with the same strength and level of quality, while fully respecting Toei Animation and their remarkable work.”

Meanwhile, an alleged Toei animator previously expressed concerns that the remake could diminish the value of the original anime.

Fortunately, many fans came to the series' defense, assuring that they would continue to support Toei Animation's adaptation while also embracing the new version of One Piece.

The One Piece

Just like the classic anime, Netflix’s The One Piece follows Monkey D. Luffy as he pursues his dream of becoming the Pirate King and finding the mysterious One Piece treasure alongside his Straw Hat crew.

As he sails across the Grand Line, Luffy makes use of his ability to stretch his limbs like rubber to take on the villains he and his crew encounter.

The remake will adapt the beginning of Eiichiro Oda’s manga, the East Blue Saga, covering the first 50 chapters in seven episodes with a total runtime of around 300 minutes.

The first season will lead up to Luffy’s encounter with Sanji, the sous-chef of the floating Baratie restaurant.

The One Piece is slated to release in February 2027 on Netflix.
