The upcoming Shondaland murder mystery series The Residence is set to premiere on Netflix next year, and it is expected to be one of the highly-anticipated original programs on the platform considering the caliber of talent involved.

Let's explore everything we know so far about the upcoming series below.

Inspired by the book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House by Kate Andersen Brower, The Residence is described as a screwball whodunit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion.

Amid all the twists and turns, detective Cordelia Cupp partners with skeptical FBI special agent Edwin Park to untangle an intriguing murder mystery.

While it is inspired by the Brower book, the series is still an all-new story and they only took the source material as a jumping-off point for its premise.

"One of the things that really struck me in reading Kate Brower’s book, which is where this all started, was the sheer theatricality of it all," showrunner Paul William Davies said to Tudum.

"People often use the term upstairs/downstairs to describe life in these big houses like the White House, but I really thought of it more in terms of onstage/backstage."

Davies hopes that people will be "entertained" and get "engaged" as they watch the mystery unfold.

Who is Starring in Netflix's The Residence?

The show's massive cast ensemble includes Emmy winner Uzo Aduba (Cordelia Cupp), Randall Park (Edwin Park), Emmy nominee Giancarlo Esposito, former senator Al Franken, Julian McMahon, Jason Lee, Ken Marino, Bronson Pinchot, Susan Kelechi Watson, Kylie Minogue, and many more.

The late Andre Braugher was supposed to star in the series as well. However, he passed away while production was suspended due to the Hollywood strikes last year. Esposito was tapped to take over his role.

"We have an amazing group of phenomenally talented, good, good, good human beings who are generous, thoughtful, fun, gifted, talented, just awesome. We loved coming to work every day," Aduba described the cast.

When is Netflix's The Residence Coming Out?

All eight episodes of the first season of The Residence are slated to premiere on Netflix on March 20.
