Wizard of the Coast has recently shared the launch details for the upcoming Modern Horizons 2 set, including its pre-launch event plans and official release date.
In the Wizards Play Network website, WOTC has confirmed that the launch date is June 11, 2021. Although Modern Horizons 2 is a supplemental Magic: The Gathering set like Commander Legends and Time Spiral Remastered, it will also get a lot of the same products a major Standard release would normally receive, with both Prerelease Packs and Set boosters being made for it.
Just like the first Modern Horizons set released in 2019, Modern Horizons 2 is a set of entirely new Magic cards made specifically for the Modern format (with a few reprints), and the cards are not Standard-legal. The first one was well-received by fans for its fun Limited format experience while expanding the Modern format with some powerful cards although it received criticism for printing the powerful Hogaak, Arisen Necopolis, which is now banned in Modern.
Modern Horizons 2 will also be the first-ever non-Standard set that will have Prerelease Packs attached to it. The Prerelease Packs are usually sold during Prerelease events for Standard-legal sets, and they come with six booster packs, a special stamped prerelease promo card, and a spindown life counter. The product is designed for Sealed Deck, the typical format for Prerelease events.
Hopefully, local game stores will host Prerelease events by the time Modern Horizons 2 is released. Associated stores have been forced to close and cancel sanctioned MTG events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but with vaccines rolling out to the public soon, we expect that players will have the chance to enjoy Modern Horizons 2 Prerelease and launch events later this year.
