The X-Men have officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following Wolverine’s appearance in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, alongside other Fox-Marvel characters. As many now await the X-Men reboot, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has finally revealed the mutants’ future in the MCU.
By the looks of it, after Hugh Jackman reprised his iconic role in the third Deadpool movie—despite his supposed retirement in 2017’s Logan—a major recasting is expected, and the MCU itself may be reset following the highly anticipated Avengers: Secret Wars.
Will the MCU’s X-Men Reboot Be Recast?

In a talk with the press (via Variety), Feige confirmed that the MCU’s X-Men reboot will feature a new cast, following the return of several original actors from the 2000s and 2010s films in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
For starters, it has been revealed that Patrick Stewart will once again appear as Professor X, alongside Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops, and Kelsey Grammer as Beast.
Stewart previously appeared in the MCU in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, while Grammer had a cameo in the post-credits scene of 2023’s The Marvels.
That said, Doomsday may mark the final time these actors portray their iconic characters, as new stars are set to take over the roles in the upcoming reboot.
“We’re utilizing that [story] not just to round out the stories we’ve been telling post-Endgame, just as importantly—and you can look at the at the Secret Wars comics for where that takes you—it very, very much sets us up for the future,” Feige explained. “Endgame, literally, was about endings. Secret Wars is about is about beginnings.”
Will Avengers: Secret Wars Reboot the MCU?

While the MCU may undergo major changes after Secret Wars, Feige was careful not to call it a “reboot,” but rather a “reset.”
“Reboot is a scary word. Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline—we’re thinking along those lines,” he said. “X-Men is where that will happen next.”
This means it will be a fresh start for the MCU’s superpowered mutants, focusing on Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters and beginning the story with its adolescent characters.
“They have been a place to tell stories about young people who feel different and who feel Other and who feel like they don’t belong,” the Marvel boss continued. “That’s the universal story of mutants, and that is where we’re going.”
But the X-Men won’t be the only ones getting recast. In fact, other major characters will also be portrayed by new actors in the future.
Feige acknowledged that while it might be difficult for fans to see different actors playing their favorite characters—citing, for example, David Corenswet replacing Henry Cavill as Superman—it isn’t impossible.
Doomsday and Secret Wars are scheduled to premiere on December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027, respectively.
